A few well chosen words, and it all becomes clear.
In the long grey winter of 1994, when we first decided to form a company that would make use of our public relations experience in finance and aerospace . . . our ad writing and marketing backgrounds . . . and our writing and production nitpickiness, we took a good hard look at ourselves. Ourselves, we found, were in Luxembourg. It happens.
Though we had just moved there from a snow-packed New York winter (13 snowstorms - one on the day we moved), we already knew a couple of things. We knew that Lux is a convenient shorthand for the Grand Duchy itself. And that Fiat - in addition to being a kind of car made in Italy, where some of our grandparents were made - also meant 'a done thing.' More or less. Like 'executive fiat.'
But what we were most sure of, and the principal reason for the name, was that we words were - are - important to us. The Latin words Fiat lux are recorded in Genesis as the first ever spoken:
Dixitque Deus, 'Fiat lux'. Et facta est lux.
And God said, "Let there be light!" And there was light.
